SparkToro is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company founded by Moz founder Rand Fishkin. It offers a tool to discover the publications, channels, and people that influence a target audience.
As you may already know, Rand first gave us a testimonial in 2009, after we more than doubled the sales of his company, Moz. We subsequently worked with Moz to help it transition from a subscription-based publisher to a SaaS company.
In 2018, Rand invited our founders, Karl and Ben, to become founding investors in his new company, SparkToro. Then, after SparkToro launched, Rand hired us to grow its sales. The following testimonial is about the work we have done to more than double SparkToro’s conversion rate and sales.

Tell us about SparkToro’s journey to date
“We launched in April of 2020 —aka the worst time to launch a new company in 100 years. But have managed to get to profitability and a few hundred customers. And, in large part, that is thanks to work we did with Conversion Rate Experts over the summer.”
What was your prior experience of conversion rate optimization?
“We’ve worked with agencies before, we’ve done it in-house at previous roles, Casey, my co-founder worked at Wistia, he was at HubSpot, and Ookla. I, obviously, founded and ran Moz for a very long time. So we have a lot of experience in this world.”
What approaches had you already tried?
“Casey and I have both previously worked with Conversion Rate Experts at other companies. We have also both worked with other conversion rate optimization consultants and agencies, and obviously done some of the work ourselves. We’ve hired in-house people to do those with us.”
Why was CRE the right choice?
“Our previous experiences with them had always produced significant, substantial results.”
What do you like most about working with CRE?
“For us, the best aspect of working with Conversion Rate Experts is having someone who has deep experience across a broad range of clients and projects, websites, other SaaS businesses, bringing that perspective of what has produced change in the past, what doesn’t work well.”
What will the impact be?
“The biggest result for us is getting to profitability faster and reducing our burn rate so that the capital that we have in the bank from our investment can be used for future decisions instead of burning and paying our salaries and our health care. That is really transformative.”
